# Terramate

> Terramate is a cloud-based Infrastructure as Code (IaC) management platform that helps teams manage, organize, and collaborate on Terraform and OpenTofu codebases. The platform consists of Terramate CLI (an open-source orchestration and code generation tool) and Terramate Cloud (a fully managed SaaS service providing collaboration, observability, drift detection, and governance). Terramate integrates with any existing CI/CD platform and doesn't require access to cloud accounts, state files, or source code.

Terramate enables teams to **build**, **deploy**, **manage** and **observe** cloud infrastructure with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, OpenTofu, Terragrunt, Kubernetes and others. It provides a next-generation Infrastructure as Code Management Platform that runs natively in your existing CI/CD system.

1. **Streamline configuration management and environments**: Manage environments and services with stacks and code generation to keep configuration DRY
2. **Automate and orchestrate Terraform, OpenTofu and Terragrunt in any CI/CD**: Turn any CI/CD into a powerful IaC vending machine
3. **Enable better collaboration, governance, observability and drift control**: Plan previews, policies, observability, notifications, SlackOps, automated drift detection and reconciliation
4. **Enable developer self-service infrastructure**: Terramate Catalyst enables developers to deploy and manage infrastructure in a self-service way using reusable Bundles and Components without needing deep Terraform expertise

**Important**: Terramate is **not** a CI/CD platform. It integrates with your existing CI/CD (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, Atlantis, Circle CI, Jenkins, etc.), allowing you to reuse existing workflows, compute, access management, and more.

## Core Concepts

Terramate organizes infrastructure code into **stacks** - collections of infrastructure resources managed as a unit. Stacks are identified by directories containing `*.tm.hcl` files with `stack {}` blocks. Terramate provides **orchestration** to execute commands (like `terraform apply`) in stacks using change detection, **code generation** to keep configuration DRY, and **configuration** via variables and metadata.
